Burgundy glasses

The balloon glass for pinot noir, gamay and rich chardonnay.

Burgundy glasses have a wide, rounded bowl, which is why they are also called balloon glasses. That shape gives aromatic wine such as pinot noir plenty of air. Choose from eight Spiegelau collections, all crystal glass, in boxes of 6 or 12.

Why a Burgundy wine glass is so wide

Pinot noir from Burgundy is finer and lighter than a Bordeaux, with less tannin and plenty of aroma. A wide bowl gives that wine a large surface to breathe. The opening is narrower than the belly of the glass, so the aroma gathers above the wine and goes straight to your nose.

That makes a Burgundy glass wider than a Bordeaux glass, and often a little shorter. The Definition Burgundy glass holds 96 cl. You pour only a small part of that: up to the widest point of the balloon. Pinot noir is served a little cooler than a Bordeaux, at around 14 to 16°C. In the wide bowl it warms quickly, so pour small amounts.

Which wine in a Burgundy glass

Red wine with finesse and little tannin: pinot noir, gamay from Beaujolais, nebbiolo from Piedmont. Rich, oaked white wine, such as a Burgundy chardonnay, also gives more aroma in the large bowl than in a small glass. Read more about glasses for white under white wine glasses.

For full-bodied red wine with plenty of tannin, such as cabernet sauvignon, the taller Bordeaux glass is the better choice. If you drink both, take one of each shape from the same collection. All the glasses for red side by side are under red wine glasses.

Spiegelau Burgundy glasses: eight collections

All the Burgundy glasses on this page are by Spiegelau. They differ in price per glass, pack size and what else the collection includes.

Lifestyle and Hybrid are the most affordable per glass, in boxes of 12. Hybrid also has a Bordeaux glass, a red and a white wine glass and a champagne glass in the same line. With that you cover a whole table.

Authentis, Vino Grande, Arabesque and Willsberger Anniversary sit in the middle and also come in boxes of 12. Authentis and Arabesque add a Bordeaux glass and a white wine glass, Willsberger Anniversary a red and a white wine glass.

Definition and Hi-Lite are at the top of the price range and come in boxes of 6. Both also have a universal glass for red and white. If you pour full-bodied reds as well as pinot noir, choose a collection that also has a Bordeaux glass, such as Definition (Hi-Lite has none). That way you can later reorder both shapes in the same style.

Ordering and caring for balloon glasses

The price in the webshop is per glass, including 21% VAT. You buy by the box: the price per glass times 6 or 12. A restaurant counts per cover, plus the glasses in the dishwasher and a reserve. A balloon glass takes up more space in the cupboard and the glass rack than a Bordeaux glass, so allow for that too.

Spiegelau makes its crystal glass dishwasher safe. Place the wide bowls apart so they do not knock against each other. When polishing, hold the glass by the bowl and never twist the foot and the bowl in opposite directions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Burgundy glass the same as a balloon glass?

Usually, yes. A balloon glass means a wine glass with a wide, rounded bowl, and that is the shape of a Burgundy glass. The term is also used for the large gin and tonic glasses, which you will find under cocktail glasses.

How is it different from a Bordeaux glass?

A Burgundy glass is wider and rounder, a Bordeaux glass taller and straighter. The first brings out the aroma of light, aromatic wine. The second gives full-bodied wine with tannin room.

Can white wine go in a Burgundy glass?

Yes, for full, oaked white wine such as a Burgundy chardonnay. Fresh white wine warms up too quickly in the large bowl, so it is better poured into a smaller glass.

Which Spiegelau collections have a Burgundy glass?

In our webshop, eight: Lifestyle, Hybrid, Authentis, Vino Grande, Arabesque, Willsberger Anniversary, Definition and Hi-Lite. The first six come in boxes of 12, Definition and Hi-Lite in boxes of 6.

Do I order per glass or per box?

Per box of 6 or 12. The price shown is per glass, including VAT.

Can a balloon glass go in the dishwasher?

Yes, Spiegelau makes its glasses dishwasher safe. Do check that the wide bowl fits without touching another glass.

How much is shipping?

In Belgium €8 incl. VAT, and from €100 incl. VAT you pay nothing. To the Netherlands and Luxembourg €25 incl. VAT, free from €1,000 incl. VAT.

Where can I hold them?
