White wine glasses

A smaller bowl, so the wine stays cool in the glass.

Buying white wine glasses means choosing a smaller bowl than for red. You pour less at a time, so the wine stays cool to the last sip. Choose from crystal glass by Spiegelau and Nachtmann, in boxes of 6 or 12.

Why a white wine glass is smaller

You drink white wine cooler than red, usually between 8 and 12°C. A small bowl means smaller pours, and they are finished before the wine warms up. The narrower opening keeps the fresh aroma together above the glass.

The stem helps too: your hand stays away from the bowl. So hold the glass by the stem, and put the bottle back in the cooler between pours. Let a glass that comes warm out of the dishwasher cool first as well, or it will warm the wine straight away.

White wine glasses by collection

Eight Spiegelau collections have their own white wine glass. Festival and Winelovers are the most affordable per glass. Hybrid, Superiore and Authentis sit in the middle, Arabesque, Willsberger Anniversary and Definition higher. Hybrid and Authentis have a glass for almost every wine in the same line, from Bordeaux to champagne.

If you choose the white wine glass from the same collection as your red wine glass, they share the same style on the table. Under red wine glasses you can see which collections also have a Bordeaux or Burgundy glass.

From Nachtmann there is the large white wine glass from Palais, in boxes of 6. Palais also has a red wine glass and a champagne glass, for anyone who wants one Nachtmann line on the table.

Three universal glasses are here too: Apero, Definition and Hi-Lite. They serve red and white, so if you are looking for one glass for both, start there.

Which white wine glass for which wine

Fresh, light white wine such as sauvignon blanc, riesling or muscadet suits a classic white wine glass: not too large, with a bowl that narrows towards the top. That keeps the freshness and the citrus and green fruit aromas together.

Rich, full white wine aged in oak, such as a chardonnay from Burgundy, needs more room. Pour it into a larger glass, such as the large Palais white wine glass, or even a Burgundy glass. Serve a fresh rosé in the same glass as light white wine.

For sparkling wine, take a flute or a tulip; you will find them under champagne glasses. A good champagne can also go in a white wine glass: the aroma comes through better than in a narrow flute.

Quantities, packaging and the dishwasher

At home one white wine glass alongside a red wine glass is enough. In a restaurant you count per cover, plus the glasses in the dishwasher and a reserve for breakage. If you serve a lot of white on the terrace in summer, keep a larger stock of that glass. A white wine glass from the same collection as your red wine glass makes reordering simpler: one line, one pack size.

The price is per glass, including 21% VAT. You buy by the box: 12 for most Spiegelau collections, 6 for Definition, Hi-Lite and Palais. So the box price is the price per glass times 6 or 12.

Spiegelau makes its crystal glass dishwasher safe. Use rinse aid against limescale marks and dry with a lint-free cloth. All the shapes side by side, from Bordeaux to champagne, are under wine glasses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a white and a red wine glass?

A white wine glass has a smaller bowl. You pour less into it, so the wine stays cool. A red wine glass is larger, so the wine gets air.

Can white wine go in a universal glass?

Yes. Apero, Definition and Hi-Lite have a universal glass for red and white. Pour a little less white wine into it and it stays cool.

Which glass should I use for chardonnay?

Pour a full, oaked chardonnay into a larger glass, such as the large Palais white wine glass or a Burgundy glass. For a fresh, unoaked chardonnay a standard white wine glass is fine.

How does the price work: per glass or per box?

You see the price per glass, including VAT, and order by the box. Each glass states whether a box holds 6 or 12.

Can I put them in the dishwasher?

Yes, Spiegelau makes its glasses dishwasher safe. For Palais by Nachtmann, check the product information. Do not leave the glasses in the machine after the programme, but dry them straight away.

How much is shipping to the Netherlands?

To the Netherlands and Luxembourg €25 incl. VAT, free from €1,000 incl. VAT. Within Belgium it is €8 incl. VAT, free from €100 incl. VAT.

Can I see the glasses in the showroom?

Yes, by appointment in the showroom in Marke (Kortrijk). Glasses stand on set tables and you can pick them up yourself.
