Carafe or decanter: what do you need?

A decanter is a wine carafe with a wide base. The wine spreads over a large surface, so it gets air. You pour an older red wine into it slowly, so the sediment stays in the bottle.

How long should you leave a wine in the decanter? A young red can happily have half an hour to an hour of air. An old wine is best decanted shortly before the meal, because its aroma is more fragile.

A carafe is mainly for pouring: water at the table, the house wine, or a wine that does not need air. It is slimmer and pours easily. A whisky decanter has a stopper and stays on the sideboard or the bar.

Which decanter to choose: capacity and use

Capacity matters most. A bottle of wine is 0.75 litres. A one-litre carafe leaves room above the wine, or holds water for a table of four to six.

  • 0.25 litres: Tavola by Spiegelau, for a glass or two at the table.
  • 0.75 litres: Novo and the Definition wine decanter with stopper, for a full bottle of wine.
  • 1 litre: Pisa, Soiree and Style by Spiegelau, and Bossa Nova by Nachtmann.
  • Whisky: the Perfect Serve whisky decanter, and the Bossa Nova decanter to go with the Bossa Nova whisky glasses.
  • Small and matt: the Trencadis carafe by Pordamsa in porcelain, 12 by 5 cm, in packs of 6.

A decanter to match your glasses

A carafe looks best next to glasses from the same line. Definition, Soiree and Style also have wine glasses, and Soiree has water and long drink glasses as well. If you choose the Soiree carafe for water, you will find the matching glasses under water glasses. Water pours more calmly from a carafe than from a bottle, and you see at once when it needs refilling.

The Bossa Nova decanter by Nachtmann goes with the tumblers and long drink glasses in the same pattern, which you will find under whisky glasses. Perfect Serve by Spiegelau puts the whisky decanter alongside tumblers and a mixing glass.

The Trencadis carafe by Pordamsa is not crystal. It is made of matt porcelain and suits a table with porcelain from the Pordamsa Sublime line.

Cleaning and ordering

A carafe with a narrow neck is best cleaned by hand: warm water, perhaps a dash of vinegar against limescale, then left to drain upside down. A bottle brush with a long handle helps with wine residue at the bottom. Whether a carafe can go in the dishwasher is stated on the product sheet.

We sell the crystal carafes and decanters individually. The price includes 21% VAT. The Pordamsa carafe comes in packs of 6: there the total is the price per piece times six.

A decanter is also a gift that will be on the table for years. Would you like to hold one first? Book an appointment at the showroom. For hospitality businesses there is a separate professional webshop. You see your prices and terms after signing in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a carafe and a decanter?

A decanter is a wine carafe with a wide base, so the wine gets air. A carafe is slimmer and is mainly for pouring, such as water or the house wine. In practice the words are often used interchangeably.

Do I need to decant every wine?

No. A young, full-bodied red benefits from some air. An old wine is decanted mainly to leave the sediment behind, shortly before serving. White and light red wine you simply pour from the bottle or a carafe.

Which decanter is suitable for whisky?

The Perfect Serve whisky decanter by Spiegelau or the one-litre Bossa Nova decanter by Nachtmann. The Bossa Nova decanter has the same pattern as the Bossa Nova tumblers.

How do I clean a carafe?

By hand, in warm water, perhaps with a dash of vinegar against limescale. Leave it to drain upside down. Whether it can go in the dishwasher is stated on the product sheet.

Do I buy a carafe individually?

Yes, the crystal carafes by Spiegelau and Nachtmann are sold individually. The small Trencadis carafe by Pordamsa comes in packs of 6. All prices include VAT.

How much is shipping for a carafe?

In Belgium €8 incl. VAT, free from €100 incl. VAT. If you order the carafe together with glasses, you reach that threshold sooner. To the Netherlands and Luxembourg €25 incl. VAT, free from €1,000 incl. VAT.

Can I see the carafes first?

Yes, in the showroom in Marke (Kortrijk), Doenaertstraat 16, by appointment. There you can see a quarter-litre carafe next to a one-litre one.
