Highball or long drink glass: what is the difference?

The two names are used interchangeably. A highball is usually slightly shorter and wider, a long drink glass taller and narrower. Both hold a mixed drink with plenty of ice. In a narrow, tall glass the bubbles of tonic or soda last longer than in a wide bowl.

Spiegelau has a highball in Soiree and in Vino Grande, and long drink glasses in Soiree, Elegance, Lounge and Perfect Serve. Perfect Serve also has a small version, for a shorter mix or a smaller serve of soft drink. Ultra has an extra-tall long drink glass, for anyone who wants the glass really tall.

Fill the glass to the top with ice first, then pour in the spirit and the tonic. Lots of ice melts more slowly than a few cubes, so the drink waters down less quickly. That is why you choose a glass larger than the drink alone.

Which size highball glass to choose

Nachtmann states the capacity clearly. Shu Fa holds 36 cl, Punk and Jules 37.5 cl, Bossa Nova 39.9 cl and Highland up to 44.5 cl. For a gin and tonic or a highball with plenty of ice, 36 cl is a good minimum. If you pour generously or fill the glass to the top with ice, take Highland.

Highland comes straight and square. The square glass stands out on the table and sits well next to the square Highland tumbler, which you will find under water glasses. Noblesse and Ethno by Nachtmann also have a long drink glass. The Palais juice tumbler is shorter, for juice at breakfast.

Highball glasses and tumblers from the same line

Choose your long drink glass to match your tumblers. Bossa Nova, Highland, Punk, Shu Fa and Jules by Nachtmann have a long drink glass and a tumbler in the same pattern. That way whisky and gin and tonic match on the bar. The tumblers are under whisky glasses.

At Spiegelau, Perfect Serve does the same, with long drink, tumbler and cocktail glasses in one bar line. Soiree continues with wine and water glasses, Vino Grande with wine glasses and a champagne coupe. If you prefer to pour a gin and tonic into a generous stemmed glass, you will find the Gin & Tonic glass under cocktail glasses.

Packaging, dishwasher and ordering

Spiegelau sells its long drink glasses in boxes of 12. Nachtmann comes in boxes of 4, 6 or 12. Highland, Punk, Shu Fa and Jules are also available in boxes of 4, handy for a small set at home. The price is per glass, incl. 21% VAT, and the box costs the price per glass times the number of glasses.

A tall glass has a small footprint. Stand it firmly in the dishwasher rack so it does not topple against another glass. Spiegelau describes its glasses as dishwasher safe. Rinse aid keeps them free of limescale marks, and a lint-free cloth does the rest.

In a venue, long drink glasses go round quickly. Besides the number of places at the bar, count the glasses in the dishwasher and a reserve for breakage. More bar and table glassware is under hospitality glasses. For hospitality businesses there is a separate professional webshop. You see your prices and terms after signing in.
