Which size of flat plate to choose

The size decides what a plate is for. Measure the plate you use at home now: that is the best starting point.

  • 15 to 17 cm: bread, butter or an amuse-bouche.
  • 19 to 23 cm: starter, dessert or breakfast.
  • 26 to 28 cm: the dinner plate for the main course.
  • 29 to 31 cm: a generous dinner plate, for those who like plenty of white around the food.
  • 31 to 34 cm: the charger, which stays under the dinner plate.

Coupe or rimmed

A coupe plate rises without a rim. The food gets the full surface, and the plate stacks compactly. Schönwald, Playground and Heart & Soul have many coupe plates.

A rimmed plate looks more classic. The rim keeps sauce in place and gives you a grip when serving. Schönwald also makes rimmed plates, in many sizes, and Le Coq Porcelaine puts a gold or coloured line on the rim, as with Anthiros and Ionica.

The brands

Schönwald has the most sizes, with lines such as Fine Dining, Form 98, Unlimited and Shiro. Figgjo from Norway makes Base, Grad, Ting, Verde and Front Dining, in packs of 6.

Le Coq Porcelaine has dinner plates from 25.5 to 28 cm and chargers up to 34 cm. Playground and Heart & Soul have coupe plates and plates with relief. Pordamsa makes plates in matt and glossy porcelain with a free shape, such as Sublime Taffoni. Dibbern has fine white dinner plates, also with a platinum rim.
